County approves traffic-safety grants including IUP regional allocation and DA enforcement grant

Indiana County commissioners on May 13 approved two traffic-safety grants aimed at reducing traffic fatalities and improving highway safety across a five-county region.
At the request of District Attorney’s Office representative Michael Schmidt, the board approved the FY27 Police Traffic Service Enforcement Grant for $18,374.71. The grant funds overtime enforcement activities addressing impaired driving, seat-belt use, aggressive driving/speeding, pedestrian safety and distracted driving; it requires no local match and will be used for overtime costs.
The board also approved the IUP/IRHS Community Traffic Safety Project (a PennDOT-funded regional initiative) with a total allotment of $109,009.91 and county allocations as follows: Indiana $19,036.95; Butler $52,550.71; Armstrong $17,005.08; Clarion $9,521.29; Jefferson $10,895.89. The project funds education, outreach, targeted enforcement and judicial support consistent with national and state goals to reduce traffic fatalities.
Both motions carried unanimously. County staff will implement grant contracts and coordinate regional outreach and enforcement activities with partner counties and the Institute for Rural Health and Safety at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
