At its May 5 meeting the Glennville City Council approved a series of routine and project-related items including personnel hires, budgeted transfers and equipment purchases.
Personnel and appointments: the council approved hiring Stuart Bland as interim Code Enforcement Officer and unanimously approved hiring Amy W. Murray as a consultant. It re-appointed Delois Lanier to the Housing Authority for a five-year term through March 31, 2031.
Budgets and contracts: the council approved issuing $10,000 from the FY'26 General Fund to the Downtown Development Authority and $10,000 to the Industrial Development Authority. Councilmembers also amended the agenda to consider and then approve a contract for a downtown stage area; DDA member Jennifer Bland told the council the clause prohibiting weddings was an error and should be corrected to allow weddings, and the council approved the contract.
Procurement: using SPLOST funds, the council awarded the low bid ($12,239) for three sets of turnout gear to Central Alabama Training Solutions and awarded battery-powered exhaust fans to AEST Fire & Safety for $6,210. The council also approved a sign permit for the Glow Lounge at 103 E. Barnard Street and unanimously approved adding an additional street light at the end of Kelly Street.
Public-safety policy: the council voted unanimously to prohibit temporary fireworks stands in the city for the Fourth of July celebration while a drought and burn ban are in effect; the ban would be revisited if the burn ban is lifted.
Most motions passed unanimously; a notable exception was the appointment of Scott Terrell as Fire Chief, which passed 3-1.
