Harrison Township board confirms $1.33 million special assessment for canal dredging

The Charter Township of Harrison Board of Trustees on May 26 adopted Resolution No. 5 confirming Special Assessment Roll No. 231 to fund removal of accumulated organic sediment and aquatic weeds from the Archer, Lakeshore and Pardee canals. The board voted unanimously to approve the assessment.
Clerk Adam Wit told the board the roll was prepared after petitions were received from residents in the district and sent to bond counsel to permit financing by bond sale. The estimate for the project is $1,333,547.03, covering 128 lots, and the assessments will be divided into ten equal annual installments with the first installment due Dec. 1, 2026.
The resolution specifies interest on installments at an estimated 5% per annum, with interest calculation commencing July 1, 2026, and allows owners to prepay assessments until June 24, 2026, to avoid financing interest if they wish to prepay before the bond sale. The resolution also provides that lots hosting dredging equipment or sediment-bag access points and lots that host sediment bags will not be charged for the cost of work.
The board recorded the vote as AYES: Kenneth Verkest, Adam Wit, Lawrence Tomenello, Brian Batkins, David Bratto, Dean Olgiati, Liza Rabaut; NAYS: None. Township Treasurer Lawrence Tomenello moved the resolution and Trustee David Bratto seconded it.
Next steps: the clerk will deliver the special assessment roll to the township treasurer with a warrant commanding collection in accordance with board directions. Property owners will receive specific assessment amounts and payment schedules as the roll is finalized.
