Public works asks board for $2M addition to emergency repairs contract after storms

The Greenburgh Town Board on Dec. 16 heard from the town's public-works representative about a request to increase by $2,000,000 an emergency and on-call contract originally awarded in May.

The public-works speaker said the original contract was for about $2.4 million and that storm damage and extensive deterioration have required additional unanticipated work; if approved the total could approach $4.4 million. "We had to do a lot of work...with our aging infrastructure and these incredible storms we're having," the commissioner said, pointing to a major storm on July 14 as an example.

Members pressed staff for a clear list of projects, costs and whether line items were emergency or planned work. Staff said they had circulated project lists and would provide itemized numbers and invoices for the board to review before the Dec. 17 meeting. One member questioned whether rebidding part of the unspent original contract would be appropriate if work is delayed by winter.

Why it matters: The request would materially increase a public-works contract and involves funds that cover emergency repairs used by multiple village and unincorporated areas. Board members said they need the detailed cost breakdown to ensure transparency and to assess whether rebidding would be appropriate for unspent work.

What’s next: Public-works staff agreed to email project lists with costs and classifications (emergency vs planned) and to meet with the comptroller and other board members to walk through the breakdown ahead of the 8 p.m. meeting tomorrow.
