Bainbridge Island City Council adjourns to 30-minute executive session to evaluate applicant

The Bainbridge Island City Council on Jan. 20 adjourned into a 30-minute executive session to "evaluate the qualifications of an applicant for public employment," citing RCW 42.30.110(1)(g), the mayor said. The council expected to return at 6 p.m.

Christine Brown, the city clerk, took roll call before the recess, identifying councilmember Nelson, councilmember Land and councilmember Schneider as present. Brown introduced herself on the record as "Christine Brown, city clerk." The clerk’s roll call established attendance before the council recessed.

The mayor announced the legal basis for closing the meeting, saying the council would adjourn "pursuant to RCW 42.30.110(1)(g) to evaluate the qualifications of an applicant for public employment." That statute authorizes executive sessions for certain personnel matters and is routinely cited when councils consider candidate qualifications outside of public meeting minutes.

Staff and the mayor exchanged brief logistical remarks about a message and voicemail that had not yet been received as members prepared to leave for the executive session. There was no public discussion of candidates or personnel matters in the open portion of the meeting.

The mayor later announced the council had returned from the executive session and adjourned the special meeting. No formal motions, votes, or further public actions were recorded on the transcript beyond the adjournment to and return from the executive session.
