City Manager Blair King told the council that a construction accident struck a sewer line on Fort Ord Road on Jan. 8, releasing about "1000 gallons" that was contained and cleaned up the same day.
"About 1000 gallons was spilled. It did not reach any waterway, at all," King said. The damaged pipe was repaired within the day and required notifications to the agencies the city is required to report to; an after-action evaluation has been completed.
King also said the Department of Ecology conducted a random performance audit of the city's NPDES (stormwater) program and provided recommendations across categories including mapping, enforcement and good-housekeeping items. The council will receive that audit and the city's response on Feb. 10; King said a copy of the audit and the city's response is available on the city's stormwater management plan page on the city website.
No immediate regulatory penalties or corrective orders were reported during the meeting; the city manager described the incident as contained and subject to follow-up reporting and an internal after-action review.
