Public Works to return with updated generator budget after price increase

Public Works Director Mike told the Friday Harbor Town Council on May 7 that the cost of a planned replacement generator has increased from the $75,000 included in the last budget to about $85,000, and that staff has been renting a temporary generator after a recent outage disrupted town operations.
"That number has now gone up to $85,000 the cost of that generator," Mike said, adding that the town temporarily rented a wheeled generator after the outage and that continuing the rental for up to six months would cost about $19,000. He said lead times for a new permanent generator are roughly six months.
Council members asked whether a rent‑to‑buy arrangement might be possible to avoid repeated delivery fees; Mike said he would investigate whether the current rented unit could be converted to a permanent installation or if buying a delivered unit would be more economical.
The council directed staff to return with final figures, including delivery and installation costs and any rent‑to‑buy options, and to place a motion and proposed budget amendment on the next meeting agenda.
