Superintendent says elementary building nearing completion; gym abatement and inspections under way

Superintendent Doug Jones told the Prince Edward County School Board the elementary school construction project is moving into final phases ahead of the new school year.
Jones said crews finished removing mobile classrooms this week and completed roof work on Building C (the former library). "Building A is nearly complete, with the flooring, case work, and ceilings," he said, and staff have relocated furniture and equipment to prepare classrooms and the gym for occupancy. He added that kitchen equipment removal and updated water lines are complete and that site demo and abatement work at the gym have started.
Jones said final inspections for the fire alarm and sprinkler system have been scheduled and that handrails, changing tables and toilet accessories have been installed. He thanked the architecture and construction teams and noted steps to keep the site secure for workers and families.
The update included logistics: staff are coordinating demobilization, moving teachers out of Building G, and preparing the gym to be ready by the start of school. Jones said the division is continuing to monitor timelines and will bring updates to the board as inspections and commissioning conclude.
Next steps: complete remaining finish work and complete final fire and sprinkler inspections prior to the start of school.
