Goodview council approves licenses, business aid and park grant application; dog permit passes 4–1

The Goodview City Council on Aug. 18 approved several routine items, including liquor and club licenses, a business-assistance award for Duds and Suds Laundromat, and the submittal of a SMIF Small Town grant application to upgrade restrooms at the Selke pavilion in LaCanne Park. Separately, the council granted a permit allowing Lance and Robin Matthees to keep three dogs at 5145 7th Place in a 4–1 vote.

Councilmember Dick Ledebuhr moved and Councilmember Charlie Andring seconded approval of the consent agenda, which included the Aug. 4 regular meeting minutes and the August claims; the motion carried with all voting aye. The packet presented fund totals and claims including: General Fund $180,842.79; Economic Development (EDA) $350.00; Farmers Market $1,351.67; Water Service Fund $42,543.56; Sewer Service Fund $131,252.67; Grand Total $356,340.69.

In new business, councilmembers voted unanimously to approve the Beer, Liquor and Club license applications as presented in the council packet. The council also approved a Business Assistance and Improvement Program application from Duds and Suds Laundromat and authorized staff to submit a SMIF Small Town grant application to upgrade restroom facilities in the Selke pavilion; both motions passed on unanimous votes.

On the permit matter, Councilmember Ledebuhr moved and Councilmember Andring seconded the motion to approve a permit allowing Lance and Robin Matthees to have three dogs at 5145 7th Place. The motion passed 4–1, with Councilmember Cassandra Gilliam recorded as voting nay.

During the meeting, resident Ted Hazelton addressed the council during public comment, saying the city has a goose problem at LaCanne Park, requesting more signage to indicate dogs are not allowed in the park, and reporting that sprinklers activated during the Goodview Days fireworks and nearly ruined some of his equipment. Director of Public Works Dave Schultz responded that the city is aware of the geese issue and is addressing it.

Staff reports noted no major incidents during the three-day Goodview Days weekend, and Director of Public Works Dave Schultz reported annual leak detection found a water main break at 8th Street and 46th Avenue that has since been repaired. Fire Chief Matt Kramer said the new ladder truck is being outfitted and is expected to arrive by early September. City Administrator Dan Matejka said he is scheduled to meet with Jen Laturno of The Bar regarding city business.

The council adjourned at 5:25 p.m. The next regular meeting is scheduled for Sept. 8, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. at Goodview City Hall.
