Goodview council backs abatement order after public hearing on nuisance at 4650 8th Street

The Goodview City Council on Oct. 6 adopted a resolution ordering abatement of alleged nuisance and zoning violations at 4650 8th Street following a public hearing and staff briefings.
City Administrator Dan Matejka, Police Chief Lonnie Roloff and City Attorney Mike Flaherty told residents the City has followed current city ordinances and law while pursuing compliance and has reached out to community services, including Veterans Services, to assist the property owner. Matejka said the City will press ahead with enforcement steps discussed at the hearing.
City Attorney Mike Flaherty told the hearing a white canopy that had blown into the road over the weekend was returned to the property by an officer but "could be declared a hazard," and that if so, City staff could remove it without further Council action. Matejka said he would have maintenance staff address the canopy immediately.
Several neighbors spoke during the hearing. Megan Ehlers (755 46th Ave.) said the property owner "has not been seen since last Wednesday, October 1." Alex Dingfelder (725 47th Ave.) thanked the City for taking the situation seriously. Amy Wolfe (4720 8th Street) asked whether a City cleanup would merely be undone if the owner returned; Flaherty said that could happen and recommended the City consider revising abatement procedures to make repeat violations more difficult.
After the public hearing closed, the Council approved Resolution No. 1285 by motion (moved by Councilmember Dick Ledebuhr and seconded by Councilmember Cassandra Gilliam). The motion carried unanimously. The resolution records the Council's findings, conclusions and order regarding the alleged code violations and sets the abatement process in motion consistent with existing ordinance.
Separate from the nuisance matter, the Council approved a Memorandum of Understanding with Hawkins Ash CPAs LLP for auditing services for the years ended Dec. 31, 2026, 2027 and 2028 (moved by Councilmember Charlie Andring; seconded by Councilmember Dick Ledebuhr). That motion carried unanimously.
In other business Councilmember Ledebuhr asked about a property on 63rd Avenue; Matejka reported City Attorney Mike Flaherty has photos and is preparing a letter to the owner. The meeting adjourned at 5:36 p.m. The next regular meeting is set for Oct. 20, 2025 at 5:00 p.m. at Goodview City Hall.
