Long County projects about $47,000 in General Fund after payroll; commissioners expect $600,000-plus tax deposit and approve equipment and procurement policies

County Manager Shane Richardson told the Long County Board of Commissioners on May 5 that, after paying monthly expenses and payroll, the county projects about $47,000 remaining in the General Fund. Richardson said the Tax Commissioner’s office confirmed that more than $600,000 in tax revenue would be sent to the commissioners’ office for deposit the following day and that additional tax collections were expected later in the week.
The financial update included a review of current balances, recent payments for the jail and office supplies, and continued use of SPLOST and special revenue funds for designated capital and equipment expenses. Richardson also told the board that the county is working to reduce outstanding debt obligations; upcoming major obligations cited included a tax anticipation note payment due May 31 and additional payments in July.
On motions following the presentation, Commissioner John Reddish moved to pay the county’s bills; Commissioner Gerald Blocker seconded and the motion passed unanimously. The board also approved the purchase of a Scag zero-turn mower for the Road Department after Madison Smith, the department supervisor, recommended the model for performance and service reliability. Commissioner Blocker moved to approve the mower purchase; Commissioner Reddish seconded, and the motion passed unanimously.
The commissioners accepted the Long County Procurement Policies and Procedures 2026 by a unanimous vote after Commissioner Blocker moved for acceptance and Commissioner Benji Strickland seconded. Separately, the board voted unanimously to approve the April minutes and to adopt the meeting agenda with the addition of the Fire Department update.
