Preston subcommittee to begin drafting budget policy after policy review

Facilitator Andrew Sawyer called the Preston Board of Finance Financial Policy Subcommittee to order at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Preston Plains Middle School Library. Members unanimously approved the March 20, 2025 special meeting minutes.
The subcommittee, which includes Robert Castronova and Mary Gardner, reviewed the town’s draft budget and revenue policy materials and discussed approaches for a standalone budget policy. Cindy Varricchio, director of finance and school business operations, was listed as also present and will be involved in the review. Members said they reached a consensus to begin substantive work on a budget policy at the next meeting and to compare Preston’s draft with policies from other municipalities.
No members of the public spoke during the public comment period. The panel set its next meeting for March 19, 2026, at 6:30 p.m. and then adjourned at 6:46 p.m. after a motion to adjourn by Mary Gardner, seconded by Robert Castronova, which passed unanimously.
The subcommittee’s plan to prepare a dedicated budget policy signals the start of a formal drafting and review process; the committee will consider both the Preston draft and examples from other communities at the March meeting.
