Sheriff reports staffing shortages, recent crashes and dispatch life‑saving awards

The sheriff gave the board a monthly report that highlighted staffing needs and recent serious incidents, and he recognized employees for life‑saving work.
The sheriff said the office remains understaffed in patrol and corrections and that two recruits are currently in the field training officer program; the department plans written and physical testing in mid‑June and a fall academy class beginning in late August or early September. “Our FTOs do an outstanding job,” the sheriff said.
On incident counts, the sheriff reported 2,575 calls for service in May, roughly 50 fewer than the same month last year. He described a May 21 pedestrian‑vehicle fatality on Chrysler Drive and a serious crash near Route 76 and Dawson Lake. The sheriff also provided an update on a May 26 crash: a 17‑year‑old airlifted to Madison was later released and returned home.
The sheriff recognized recent life‑saving awards issued to dispatchers and noted that two deputies are finishing state accident‑reconstruction coursework and will soon be certified. He also announced new hires in corrections, a recent retirement in PSB maintenance, and other staffing moves.
Board members asked procedural questions about events and offered thanks for the department’s work. The sheriff asked members to contact him with any questions about the annual report or budget materials distributed to the board.
