Mayor Tom Brick used the block party to lay out Anderson City's summer calendar, including an air show on July 3, a post-show fireworks display produced with sister city Chesterfield, and a downtown parade on July 4.
Why it matters: The events are the city's flagship summer activities tied to the 250th national observance; they involve road closures, large crowds and family programming that residents should plan for.
At the event, Mayor Tom Brick said the air show at the Anderson airport on July 3 is free to attend and will be followed by a fireworks display organized with Chesterfield, Indiana. "It's free to get in. There's no parking charge. There's no admission charge," Brick said. He invited residents to come downtown on July 4 for the parade and noted units are still being accepted.
Brick announced the next block party in the series will be June 27 at Jackson Park and directed residents to the city of Anderson website and the city's Facebook page for sign-ups and details; a local contact number (6486000) was provided for parade registration.
Officials also described parks and recreation offerings: the Southside pool on Madison Avenue is open daily from 12:00 to 7:00 p.m., and free kayaks and paddle boats at Shadyside Park are available in hourly slots. Mayor Brick said 60 people used the kayak program in its first week of operation.
City leaders said summer activities will include live music and a fireworks finale downtown at 10:00 p.m. on July 4. Organizers urged residents to consult official city channels for schedules and any traffic advisories as event dates approach.
