Bree Zamora, a community member, told the Farmersville Unified School District board during public comment that any formal student‑athlete contract should require a coach’s signature so accountability is mutual. "When only one side is required to sign a contract, true accountability becomes one‑sided," she said, urging the board to add explicit expectations for coaches on safety, communication and equitable treatment.
Zamora argued that current district language places clear obligations on students while coaching expectations remain "implied, unwritten, or inconsistent across programs and campuses," and recommended a consistent district‑wide process for addressing concerns. "Requiring coaches to sign the contract sends a message to our student athletes that their well‑being and fair treatment matter," she said.
Board members returned to the sports contract during board business and asked staff for a status update. Trustee Alice said the provision she is prioritizing is coach acknowledgement: "The most important thing on the contract I'm looking for is the two signatures from the two coaches for the sports at one time." Trustees requested that the draft sports contract be circulated with any new language before the next school year and asked staff to confirm whether the document will include signatures from coaches and any site administrators.
The public hearing also included other comments on staffing and student wellbeing: Maurice Castillo, an ELA department chair at the junior high, asked the board to reopen discussion on a proposed junior high reading specialist position so teaching staff are fully informed; and Freddy Lopez urged stronger phone restrictions at school to improve student focus and mental health ahead of new state rules taking effect July 1.
Next steps: trustees asked staff to continue refining the sports contract language and to return with updates so the board can consider explicit coach expectations and signature lines before implementation.
