Cohasset School Committee approves Model UN delegation trip to New York

The Cohasset School Committee voted May 6 to approve a request to send a Model United Nations delegation to the National High School Model United Nations conference in New York City next year.

Advisers Mr. Turner and Mr. Sears described this year’s March trip, which included a guided United Nations tour, a visit to the 9/11 Memorial Museum and a Broadway show; the recent delegation included 49 students. The advisers requested permission to send 48 students next year so the district can complete early registration and secure committee assignments. "We're hoping to put in the request next week for 48 students," the advisers said.

Students who attended gave short testimonials to the committee about the academic and social benefits of Model UN: research and public‑speaking practice, cross‑cultural exchange, and leadership opportunities. One student said the conference helped develop both research skills and confidence working with diverse peers.

Committee members asked about costs and equity. Advisers said the trip is typically self‑funded, with district expenses limited to substitutes and incidental support; scholarship funds and leftover trip reserves have been used in the past to assist families with financial need. Advisers also described installment payment plans, with an early deposit and later payments timed to ease family budgets.

A motion to approve the trip was made and seconded, and the committee approved it by roll call during the meeting. The committee thanked the students and advisers for their presentations.
