Fostoria council updates residents: Big Boy visit logistics, summer events and a NatureWorks grant deadline

The mayor and city staff used the meeting to update council and the public on logistics for a visiting historic locomotive, a string of community events and an impending grant deadline.

Mayor provided the latest timing for the Big Boy locomotive visit: the arrival window was updated to roughly 2:30 to 2:45 p.m. on the scheduled Saturday. He said the rail park will provide on‑site parking until it is full; when the rail park reaches capacity staff will barricade the access road and direct overflow parking to the Fostoria Schools campus, with shuttle buses transporting attendees for a $5 per person fee. The mayor also advised residents to contact the police department non‑emergency line at the number read in the meeting for issues with unlawful parking.

The Director of Public Service and Safety said the city has partnered on a one‑page event information site (given in the transcript as "fossia bigboy.com") and encouraged residents to consult it for the latest information. The director also noted that a resolution authorizing the mayor to file an application for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources NatureWorks grant is on the agenda as a new business item and will need council action at the next meeting because the application deadline is July 1.

Public Affairs committee announced a series of summer events: a "Lunch on the Lawn" on June 10 at the municipal building lawn; the Wings Over Fostoria air show at the Fostoria Metropolitan Airport on June 13; the Fostoria Farmers Market’s strawberry‑day event; a Junth Jamberee of Greater Fostoria on June 13 at Foundation Park; and a glass pageant on June 14 at the Fostoria Schools Performing Arts Center. Miss Tyson, a member of the public, described the library’s adult summer reading program (started June 1) and explained how participants can earn tickets toward local prizes and attend open book club meetings.

City staff told the council that the Director of Finance will present appropriation adjustments to account for park and recreation and urban forestry costs; the transcript records amounts and states the urban forestry costs will be covered by an American Forestry Grant and reimbursed monthly. The council referred an alley closure item for 210 South Main Street to the appropriate committee for further review rather than taking it up at this meeting.
