Peace to Peace Quilters secure one-year lease at Algonac Activity Center

Jan Evans, representing Peace to Peace Quilters, told the Algonac City Council on Oct. 7 that the 65‑plus member group needs a handicap-accessible, full-time meeting space and urged the council to approve a lease at the Algonac Activity Center.

"We are here tonight representing our 65 plus growing membership," Evans said, describing the group’s desire for an accessible home where members can meet for social connection, skill development and community service. She told the council the group had raised funds and received donated labor and materials — including discounted flooring, donated paint and electricians volunteering time — to prepare the former library room for use.

Council voted to approve a lease between the city and Peace to Peace Quilters for Oct. 1, 2025–Sept. 30, 2026, at a monthly rent of $150. During discussion council members praised the group’s volunteer work and noted the activity center will host other community programs, including classes and retreats described in the lease materials.

City staff confirmed the space will be used for sewing classes, quilt retreats and meetings of the St. Clair County Quilt Trail Group. The council’s approval followed public comment overwhelmingly supportive of the quilters; several council members offered congratulations and thanked the volunteers.

The lease is effective Oct. 1, 2025; the council directed the mayor and city clerk to sign the agreement on behalf of the city. The manager’s office noted the activity center has additional meeting interest and future scheduling will be coordinated through city staff.
