Mont Belvieu said it is developing a small pocket park called Deerfield Park on a city-owned lot between Shipley Donuts and Sunberg, the city update said. City staff described the plot as too small for a large park and said the pocket park is intended as a family-friendly amenity near retail and restaurants rather than part of larger park phases.
"This little plot of City owned land was really too small to be developed into anything and rather than just having it be concreted over with all parking or just sitting empty we wanted to bring another amenity a good familyfriendly aspect to the city," the City staff member said. The staff member clarified that Deerfield Park is not part of larger projects referenced earlier in local planning — not Park Phase 2, Hackberry or Joe Matthews — and emphasized the goal of adding a small recreational option where families can gather.
Responding to resident comments about shade, the staff member said the city revised landscaping plans to include larger, faster-maturing plants in the planters so the park will provide shade sooner. No opening date or budget for the pocket park was provided.
