Jasper City Council approves summer events permits and grants alcohol license to new downtown bar

Jasper City’s council unanimously approved a set of community event permits and granted a retail beer and table-wine license to a new downtown bar during its June 2 meeting.

Kelly, presenting event permits on behalf of city staff, asked the council to approve three requests: Salsa on the Square, a free community dance class by the Athletic Arts Center to be held on Mondays starting June 8 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the courthouse square; the fifth annual Overdose Awareness Walk by Recovery Den on Aug. 31 from 4 to 6 p.m.; and a rescheduling of the Community Connections for Change resource fair to June 6 after a rainout. "Everything will stay the same, just the date will be changed," Kelly said. Council members voted to approve all three permits.

During a public hearing on a retail beer and table-wine license, the police lieutenant reported that Hot Shots — formerly Par 64 and previously the Jasper Axe House — at 1910 4th Avenue South had applied for on-premise retail beer and table wine and had met state and city requirements. "The police department does not have any objections to this application," the lieutenant said. Owner Rob Fonder introduced himself and his family, saying, "We're happy to be in business here in Jasper." No members of the public registered opposition. The council voted to approve the licenses and welcomed the establishment to the city.

The council recorded its approvals by unanimous voice vote for both the event permits and the Hot Shots license. The decisions were routine and do not require further council action; the events and the licensed business will proceed under the conditions discussed.
