St. Charles Parish accepts state funding for Lake Salvador shoreline protection project

The St. Charles Parish Council approved an intergovernmental agreement on June 1 to accept engineering and design funding from the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority for the Lake Salvador shoreline protection project (BA-0292).
Council members described the initiative as a priority identified in the parish 'shield' coastal plan and said prior work in adjacent reaches has shown positive shoreline accretion when protective rock and marsh-restoration techniques are used. The parish secured a $3 million appropriation from the CPRA plus additional grant funding; the IGA formalizes acceptance of those funds and clears the way to execute an engineering contract to design a 1.5-mile protection segment.
Supporters said the project is part of a longer program of coastal projects to protect low-lying neighborhoods and that design funds are the next step: once plans and cost estimates are complete, the parish will pursue construction funding. Public comment included general support and questions about who bears future maintenance responsibility; council said construction agreements and maintenance obligations will be clarified as the project advances.
The resolution passed unanimously. Council members said the project is intended to be shovel-ready and complementary to other regional coastal efforts.
