Board adopts new K–8 competency-based report card

The Stratham School District board voted to adopt a new K–8 competency-based report card that uses a four-level rubric (Beginning, Developing, Proficient, Proficient with Distinction) and performance indicators under each competency.
Administrators described the change as a move to clarity and vertical alignment across elementary and middle grades: competencies will be consistent across schools and performance indicators will show the specific skills that support a competency. "What we're offering is our families an opportunity to say, 'Okay, my student can do A and their next step is going to be B,'" a presenter said while showing draft report-card visuals.
The committee reported broad participation in development: roughly 163 staff and 464 caregivers responded to surveys, and about 38 committee members participated in consensus voting during the review. District administrators said they streamlined rubrics and shortened narrative requirements so narratives can focus on unique celebrations and specific next steps rather than long lists of skills.
Board members asked about teacher workload and calibration; staff described planned calibrations, exemplars and inservice time to make the new system manageable and consistent. Administrators also noted the new report card aligns with middle-school numeric reporting where the middle school will show a number grade in addition to the competency descriptor.
The board moved to approve the revised reporting system and voted in favor by voice vote. Staff said they will continue calibrations and present additional examples during the upcoming school year.
