District highlights large gains in first‑grade math; presenter announces retirement after 35 years

District instructional leaders presented evidence of sharp growth in first‑grade mathematics at Moody Elementary during the June 3 committee meeting, and one longtime coordinator announced her upcoming retirement.
"It's called I Ready Classroom Mathematics," said Kim Berky, a school improvement coordinator, describing the program and the instructional routine that supports student engagement and productive struggle. Berky showed classroom photos and a short video of a student working through a two‑digit addition problem and emphasized that students practiced multiple strategies and learned to persist despite errors.
Berky presented results from two first‑grade classrooms: classroom one rose from 6% of students on grade level in the fall to 53% by spring; classroom two rose from no students on grade level to 80% on grade level. Of those students who reached grade level, 29% in classroom one and 65% in classroom two finished above grade level, Berky said. She credited intentional lesson planning, coaching support and consistent implementation.
During the presentation the board thanked the teachers and asked about districtwide rollout plans; Berky said coaches were supporting classrooms and implementation would be strengthened across buildings via classroom coaching and continued professional development.
Berky also told the board she will retire in two weeks after 35 years in education and thanked staff and community for their support. Board members offered congratulations.
