Groveland committee reports progress on trail enhancements, kiosks and new compacting bins

At a June 4, 2026 meeting at Groveland Town Hall, the Recreation Committee reported updates on the 2025 Trail Enhancement Project, including staking, kiosks and installation of compacting trash bins.

The acting chair said the committee has been staking the locations for new trail posts and marking where kiosks will sit, adding that "we're staking out the spots where the new trail posts are going to go" and that a few proposed alignments turned out not to be permitted and will need rework. Town resident Jim Lafferty is helping build several kiosks to reduce cost and improve aesthetics, and committee members said they expect a first kiosk install once outstanding materials arrive.

Committee members reported that two compacting trash bins (so‑called "big bellies") have been placed at the Main Street and Center Street ends of the rail trail segment but have not been wired or activated yet. The committee discussed that each unit appears to have at least one panel area suitable for public‑service messaging or limited advertising and said staff (Rebecca, town administrator) will look into what is allowed and what revenue or maintenance expectations might be appropriate.

Members emphasized the importance of confirming permitting and land rights before installing infrastructure, noting that ownership of town land does not automatically permit a trail or kiosk at a specific location. The committee said it will follow up with a more specific install schedule at the next meeting once materials and permitting questions are resolved.

The committee did not take formal votes on the project at this meeting; members said they will provide an update at the next regular meeting.
