Rutherford County Budget Committee approved updated transfer-station tipping fees to reflect increased disposal charges from the county’s contractor and to cover employee pay and benefits.
Public works director Matt Davis told the committee Waste Management’s pricing follows a CPI formula and that the proposed county adjustments cover that increase plus a modest addition for staff costs. Commissioners questioned whether the rates should also be set to fully cover the landfill debt-service obligations; staff said the solid-waste fund and debt service are in separate funds and that if the commission wanted tipping fees to cover bond debt, the rates would need to be higher.
The committee approved the recommended fee schedule to begin July 1, subject to full commission ratification. The roll-call vote was 6–1 in favor.
Context and impact: staff said the revenue from tipping fees goes into the solid-waste fund and does not draw on property taxes. Public works estimated the change was near a 10% across-the-board increase tied to the contractor’s CPI-based adjustment.
Next steps: the fee schedule will be forwarded to the full commission for final approval and, if adopted, will take effect July 1.
