Commission approves several community funding requests and a parks grant application

On June 3 the Harrison County Commission approved multiple small community funding requests and authorized staff to apply for a parks grant.
The commission approved a $3,000 special funding request for the American Junior Golf Association’s Junior Golf Championship in Bridgeport (July 12–16), after an AJGA representative said last year’s event generated $104,000 for expenses and charitable distributions. Brendon Gallagher, economic developer for the city of Shinston, requested $1,500 for the city’s Independence Day celebration (July 1) and $1,500 for the Shindy Music Festival (August 1); both requests were approved by voice vote. The commission also approved $5,500 in support for six competitors from Sweepon of West Virginia selected for Team USA at the 2026 World Karate Championship in Romania; organizers said the remaining per‑competitor balance was roughly $1,400 and the county check will be made to the Amateur Athletic Union of the U.S. for registration fees.
Separately, Parks and Recreation staff brought three project proposals to seek a Berkshire Hathaway Energy Gas Transmission & Storage LLC grant totaling up to $15,000 for county park events and programming; commissioners approved a resolution to apply for the grant.
Next steps: finance staff will process approved checks and grants staff will file the Berkshire Hathaway Energy grant application.
