St. Landry students honored; North Central teams headed to National History Day and Smithsonian display

Named students and projects included Aniston Oxford (Port Barry High), Colin Johnson and Colton Fontno (Fort Barry High, perfect ELA scores noted), Annaise Pops (Port Barry Middle, Accelerated Reader milestone), and North Central teams: Chassity Smith, Kaylee Simmons and Eric Fontno ("Behind the Lens: How Lewis Hine Exposed America's Child Labor Problem"), plus Micah Dixon (paper "The Children's March of 1963") who was selected for a White House Historical Association showcase and invited to a writing workshop. Staff said additional projects from prior nationals were being recognized for achievements in 2024.
The board approved a $500 assistance request to help North Central students travel to College Park, Maryland, for the contest. District staff said they will circulate project documentation among board members and that project materials are on display to the public.
The recognitions portion of the meeting was ceremonial; no policy action beyond the travel assistance allocation was taken.
