Lakewood proclaims Juneteenth and hears youth council and Clover Park School District updates

The Lakewood City Council opened its June 1 meeting with a proclamation recognizing June 19, 2026, as Juneteenth National Freedom Day and invited community organizers to speak about the planned June 20 celebration at Lakewood City Hall.
Youth Council executive chair Elijah Stana reported successes for the year: the council grew to 56 members, supported city events, and hosted a youth summit on April 18 with more than 120 student attendees; Stana and incoming chair Ireie Hankle thanked staff and announced next year’s executive board.
Darren Lowry, Clover Park School District director #4, provided the district update: upcoming graduation dates (June 3–4), recognition of 2026 employees of the year, seven schools honored by the Washington State School Recognition Program, and a notice that the district board approved a plan to implement about $12.6 million in reductions for 2026–27 (through attrition, department/building cuts and staff reductions) with a public hearing scheduled July 13.
Council thanked youth council members and district staff for their reports and noted the Juneteenth proclamation and youth recognition would be followed by a photograph in the chambers.
