Zoning board approves conditional use permit to expand historic Aubry Cemetery

The Johnson County Zoning Board voted to recommend approval of a conditional use permit to expand the Aubry Cemetery by roughly a half-acre at 7345 West 191st Street.
Karen Miller, planning staff, said Aubry Cemetery is an approximately 3.5-acre historic cemetery established around 1860 and designated as a landmark in the Stillwell plan. The proposed expansion area is vacant with no existing burial sites; because cemeteries are a conditional use in county zoning, the expansion required a CUP and state statute requires a survey of burial lots that will be recorded with the register of deeds.
Applicant representatives described the site’s history and donation of the remnant parcel to the cemetery; Jim Riggs, representing the cemetery board, and Harold Phelps, the project representative, explained the plots are managed as burial rights rather than transferred fee-simple parcels. Staff reviewed the site and found no anticipated detrimental effects to neighboring properties and determined infrastructure to be adequate for cemetery use.
The zoning board approved the CUP, and the item will be forwarded to the Board of County Commissioners for consideration on July 16.
