The Charlottesville City School Board approved the adoption of Freedom on My Mind for the AP African‑American Studies course on June 4, following a recommendation from the specialized committee and a short community feedback process.
Dr. Brown and Mr. Bennett reported that the recommendation, reviewed by students and community members through online and paper surveys, received 19 responses total — 14 in favor of the committee’s first option and 5 favoring the alternate. The committee and staff said feedback reinforced its recommendation.
The board moved, seconded and voted to approve the textbook as presented. Staff said they would implement adoption steps and continue community communication around curriculum rollout for the 2026–27 school year.
