Princeton council advances burial-fee change, approves $877,000 in invoices and OKs parade closure

At its June 1 session the Princeton City Council handled routine financial and procedural business, advancing a fee change for cemetery services, approving invoices and approving a parade closure.

The council voted to advance ordinance O-26-014, which amends chapter 7-4-8 of the city code to adjust burial charges. City staff member Trisha told the council the only substantive change in the ordinance was an increase to the cremation burial fee, from $150 to $350, saying the prior fee did not cover the city's costs. "That is the only charge that's kind of not in line with what other communities are charging," Trisha said.

Council members also approved departmental invoices read by Deputy Clerk Elizabeth Sandoval, who listed totals for Accounts and Finances ($266,046.33); Streets and Public Improvements ($58,395.76); Public Safety ($192,587.32); and Public Property and Utilities ($359,967.40), for a grand total of $876,996.81. A motion to approve the invoices passed on a roll call with all present voting Aye.

The council approved resolution R-26-014 to request temporary closure of Illinois Route 26 from Elm Place to Park Avenue for the Homestead Festival parade on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2026. The resolution was moved, seconded and approved by roll call.

City staff also reported community events and personnel matters: the city manager (Teresa) reminded the council about Strawberry Fest and the first street concert, and announced three full-time firefighter appointments — Brett Kleinsorge, Ali Jacobson (identified as the department's first female firefighter) and Clayton Turk — who were sworn in that morning.

The meeting adjourned with the council scheduling its next regular session for Monday, June 15, 2026 at 6:00 p.m. at City Hall.
