The Catoosa County Board of Education on June 2 voted unanimously to renew Superintendent Nicks’s contract through the 2028–29 school year and approved a package of routine agenda items tied to the fiscal year closeout.
The board approved human-resources recommendations; the April financial and Eastblast reports; a July 2026 spending resolution to permit operating on one-twelfth of the expected FY27 budget until the county’s final tax digest is adopted; the child-nutrition FY26–27 meal-price increases; the CTAE local plan; a field-trip request; the FY26–27 student handbook; updates to the bullying and student-records policies and leave-time policy; and the 2026–27 pay scales. Director Carter presented the recommended consent items and asked the board to vote; a motion and second were recorded and the board approved the slate without recorded opposition.
On the spending resolution, Director Carter explained the procedure: when a district lacks a final tax digest and the new budget has not been adopted by June 30, board authorization to spend one-twelfth of a proposed budget is a standard state-authorized step to maintain operations. A member of the public had asked which budget the one-twelfth referenced; Carter said it applies to the FY27 budget and noted the district awaits the county’s final digest before finalizing budget hearings.
On nutrition, the board moved to raise breakfast by 15 cents and lunch by 20 cents for FY27; Carter said the district lost roughly $1 million last year feeding students because federal reimbursements do not cover costs. The meal-price change was presented as alignment with neighboring systems and submitted for later board approval within the consent package.
After routine business, trustees moved into two executive sessions (student and personnel matters). Upon returning to open session the board made a motion to renew Superintendent Nicks’s contract for FY27–FY29; the motion passed unanimously.
The board adjourned following the vote. No recorded roll-call tallies were read into the public record beyond the chair’s announcement that the motion passed unanimously.
