Chester board approves MOU to correct land-transfer details as school district seeks voter approval for sports complex

The Chester Town Board on Dec. 10 accepted a memorandum of understanding with the Chester Union Free School District designed to correct parcel and lot-line errors arising from a December 2023 conveyance and to preserve town access to two of three wells on the property.
Town counsel explained the MOU will “clean up that error” from the prior conveyance and clarified that two wells will remain with the town while a northern well would be conveyed back to the district with preserved access. The planning board will undertake the lot-line change and SEQRA/other planning reviews as part of the process.
The MOU also addresses timing: the school district cannot finalize plans or spend significant design money until voters approve the district’s proposed sports complex in a voter referendum scheduled for Dec. 16. The MOU sets the steps that follow either outcome so both parties can proceed with the necessary corrections and planning when appropriate.
Board members voted to authorize the supervisor to sign the MOU so the town and district can move forward with technical corrections and conditional planning steps. The board emphasized the MOU is a procedural document to correct recorded errors and to allow the district to proceed with necessary planning if the voter referendum succeeds.
