Regional water project advances as EPA grants and bonding prospects move forward

County commissioners used their June 2 meeting to update the board on progress with a multi‑jurisdictional water project being advanced by the West Central Regional Water District. Commissioner Bear said an FY24 EPA grant agreement for $3.5 million has been signed and that funds should begin to arrive.
"That grant was for $3.5 million," Commissioner Bear said, noting that an FY26 EPA grant of $750,000 designated for PK County has been awarded but lacks a signed grant agreement and that FY27 requests for Neilsville and Hendrum have moved to the next review stage. Commissioners emphasized that final disbursement of FY27 awards would depend on the federal budget process later this year.
Commissioners described project next steps: engineering and bidding for new lines to Neilsville and Hallstead planned for late summer/fall, work to increase capacity between Climax and Neilsville, and outreach including a planned August bus tour to bring local and federal legislators to the project sites. The board said the outreach is intended to solidify legislative support for additional bonding and EPA funds that will be important to advancing construction.
