Seminole County emergency center says more than 40 agencies are training for hurricane season

An agency official at the emergency operations center said more than 40 agencies took part in exercises aimed at preparing Seminole County for the upcoming hurricane season, stressing that "it just takes one to hit us and we want to prepare for that one hitting us."

The official said the exercises focus on repeated training so that response actions become second nature, and on coordinating across agencies so that "there's one mission" to help the county's most vulnerable during storms. A staff member at the center added that public information is a core element of those preparations.

Why it matters: Even when seasonal forecasts show a slightly lower number of tropical storms, local emergency coordinators said a single landfalling storm can have disproportionate effects; they argued planning and joint training with partner agencies reduce response time and improve services after an event.

Speakers at the exercise highlighted three priorities: ensuring consistent public information, maintaining agency coordination around assistance for vulnerable residents, and using training and interagency networking to smooth post-event operations. "It's the training and the networking portion of this exercise that makes it key for how we respond in postvent," one speaker said.

The session, described by participants as an exercise rather than a formal decision meeting, did not include votes or motions. Organizers said the work is part of ongoing preparedness activities to be repeated ahead of and during hurricane season.
