Seventh graders unveil Wabanaki interpretive signs at Harbor Park and library on June 15

Seventh graders Colton Butler and Matteo Jacques returned to the Select Board to present a final update on a student‑led Wabanaki signage project.
The students said research by the Panawapske Cultural and Historic Preservation group — including language translation by Gabe Paul and artwork by James Francis — resulted in two interpretive panels: one in Harbor Park describing village life and summer activities such as tanning hides and drying fish; and a library panel that shows moon seasons, clan symbols and a summary panel telling the story of an early Wabanaki family. Both signs include a QR code linking to audio of the Panawatskeg language.
The students said the board previously approved the project and the Camden Library Board of Trustees supported the effort. They invited the public to a small unveiling on June 15 sometime after 12:00 p.m., with drummers and a harbor gathering planned following a school visit.
The board thanked the students and local partners for multi‑year work that began in elementary school and matured through research, translation and design.
What’s next: The signs will be installed at the library and Harbor Park; the town will coordinate the unveiling and public access to the audio translations.
