Council confirms tourism committee appointment, endorses temporary 250th signs and addresses donation-box complaints

Council approved several non-controversial administrative items and discussed community concerns during the 'matters from and for the council' portion of the meeting.

Mayor presented the mayoral recommendation to appoint Patty French to the Convention and Tourism Committee to fill a vacancy through April 2027; a council member moved and the appointment carried by voice vote.

A member of the 250th celebration committee requested permission to place a few temporary signs around town. Council expressed general support for temporary signs provided the applicants follow the city's temporary sign permit process, work with staff to identify appropriate locations (including suggestions for downtown photo-op sites such as the depot or Veterans Memorial), and obtain necessary permits—particularly where placement would be in a public right-of-way.

Council discussed several neighborhood maintenance concerns (potholes, a leaning utility pole on David, irrigation issues with downtown flower pots) and directed staff to follow up. Multiple residents had contacted a council member about donation boxes on Seventh Street that are overflowing with trash; staff said the boxes are on private property and that the city will contact the out-of-state operator listed on the boxes to request remediation. Council noted the Caring Center is available to accept donations and that enforcement remedies would typically fall to the property owner under nuisance rules.

Council and staff also discussed scheduling a second budget work session; staff said Butler County property-tax data are expected about mid-month and recommended keeping the session on the calendar while allowing staff to cancel if materials are not ready.
