Commons project moving forward despite delays; public art curation planned

The Parks and Projects Commission reviewed a status report on improvements to the Commons, including shade structures, a performance stage and a public-art program.
Mr. Joyce told the commission the site work — concrete and grading — is largely finished, but work has been delayed because steel arrived late. He said staff expect the project to be ready within about two weeks if the schedule holds and that crews will keep the public away from unfinished structures as needed. “Steel was very late, but our guys are doing their best to get it done,” he said.
Commissioners discussed an electrical issue in the site pedestals that left an outlet below grade; Mr. Joyce said interim City Manager Mr. Pilles is having staff correct the installation and address other incorrect electrical work. Members also briefed each other that a shade cover for the playground has been ordered, though timing likely will be before the height of summer rather than in time for the upcoming Fiesta.
On public art, Mr. Joyce said pedestals for sculptures are installed and the city plans to invite Texas sculptors from a regional society; the commission discussed a proposal to engage a curator from the San Antonio Museum of Art to help select initial works. Mr. Joyce said council has approved funding to support the sculptors and related expenses.
No formal action was taken on the Commons update at the meeting; the commission moved on to other agenda items.
