The Owen J. Roberts School District recognized its Special Olympics athletes and the new Unified track team at its June 24 board meeting. Life‑skills teachers and Best Buddies co‑advisors Megan Harold and Mag Rubel described the May 15 event held at Wildcat Stadium, the nine‑station format led by high‑school volunteers, and broad community support.
"We are the life skills teachers here at the high school and we are also the co‑advisors of Best Buddies," Megan Harold said, explaining that students and volunteer partners rotated through a set of fitness and recreational stations. According to presenters, roughly 98 Special Olympics athletes from K–12 took part, supported by about 85 district staff, specialists, care professionals and many family members.
District leaders described Unified Sports as an inclusion‑focused program in which athletes with intellectual disabilities and partners compete together. The district said its first Unified track team this spring included 15 athletes and partners who practiced twice weekly and competed in several local meets, including a Chester and Delaware County conference meet.
Dr Stout thanked staff, volunteers and families and encouraged the community to attend future events, saying the program promotes social and athletic inclusion across the district.
Board members and attendees observed a short video of the event and formally recognized participating students and volunteers. The recognition was part of the superintendent’s report and preceded votes on routine business items.
