Sister Cities president thanks council for support, announces Octfest fundraiser and 2027 state conference plans

Linda Castro Sabina, president of the Sister Cities organization, used the public-comment portion of the June 1 Belvidere City Council meeting to thank council members for the group's annual budget allocation and to update the council on upcoming events and requests.
"Everything that you have given us goes directly to our children," Castro Sabina said, describing how the program gives students opportunities to travel to Germany and France. She said it takes about $6,000 a year to send participants abroad and that the group supplements the city's $2,000 annual contribution with fundraising. To that end, she said Sister Cities will hold an Octfest cultural fundraiser on Oct. 3 at Coach's Corner.
Castro Sabina also announced that Belvidere had been invited to host the Illinois state Sister Cities conference on May 1, 2027; she said the mayor had agreed to open and welcome conference attendees. The group also reported receiving a "Champion of Youth" award at the Illinois state conference in April.
Mayor and council members thanked Castro Sabina for the update and expressed support for the group's activities; no formal council action was required during the public-comment period.
