The Columbia County Board of County Commissioners approved a generative-AI policy aimed at curbing ad hoc AI subscriptions by county departments and requiring IT and HR review of products before purchase. The policy was presented as an interim measure so department heads do not independently subscribe to AI tools without IT approval.
During discussion, Mr. Craft told the board the draft lacked dates, an explicit approval path and clear disclosure language. He recommended that minutes and records state when AI assisted in their production and that the policy identify the specific platform(s) in use. County staff said the policy was drafted by HR and IT, that the intent was to 'get something on the ground' to stop uncontrolled purchases, and that the policy will be reviewed by a committee and revised as needed.
The board voted to approve the policy by voice vote and asked staff to return in a month or two with an implementation update and clearer language on disclosure and who signs off on AI tools.
