Melinda told the board the department is handling 528 total cases across eligibility programs, including adult financial assistance, Colorado Works, Medicaid and food assistance. "We have 40 child support cases, 94 leak cases that we have reviewed this year," she said, and added that one adult protection case closed in February while three child protection cases remain open. "We closed one adult protection case in February," she said.
The presenter also described a fraud repayment: after an investigation of an individual, the person has repaid benefits to the county. "There was an investigation that was done on an individual in the community and that is them paying back the benefits that they owe to the county," Melinda said.
On child-care caseloads, Melinda said the office previously put child care on a wait list to avoid running out of funds. She said two cases closed — one following a fraud investigation and another because the children reached school age — and "I have moved us off of a wait list" to give the office more flexibility to accept new child-care cases.
Separately, a commissioner announced nominations for a child welfare recognition award for "Miranda." The speaker said state approval of the award has been received and that the presentation will take place at the board’s next regularly scheduled meeting in April, around 10:00 a.m.
Procedural motions at the meeting included approval of the March 2, 2026 minutes. A motion to approve the record of proceedings "as submitted" was moved and seconded and the board recorded affirmative votes; the motion carried. Later the board voted to adjourn and voted to move into an executive session "pursuant to CRS 246-402" to receive legal advice from counsel; the maker stated the discussion would be protected by attorney-client privilege and the motion was seconded and approved.
The board did not provide additional public specifics about the executive session’s subject before the meeting moved into closed session.
