Juvenile treatment program funding cut will reduce capacity, staff say

Albany County commissioners approved a juvenile court treatment contract with reduced funding that county program staff said will cut capacity roughly in half.
Heather, who works in the county juvenile treatment program, told the board the latest contract funds three positions for the year, down from six positions funded the prior year. "We were funded for six last year. We ended up serving eight youth last year with this specific grant. So we always attempt to serve more. However, we're going to be limited with our treatment budget," Heather said.
Staff said the reduced award came from the Wyoming Judicial Branch; no reason for the cut was provided in the grant correspondence reviewed by county staff. Commissioners expressed concern about the impact on youth services. The board approved the juvenile treatment contract for the term July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2028, with the funding levels presented.
County staff said they will adjust program budgets and priorities to respond to the reduction but that fewer youth will likely be served while the smaller treatment budget remains in effect.
