The Glynn County Board of Commissioners on June 4 approved a series of routine land-use and administrative items, including two right-of-way abandonments, two sign variances, a special-use permit for a drinking establishment, and appointments to the board of tax assessors.
Engineering director Jason Hartman described AB-26-8 as an approximately 10-foot-wide unused portion of right-of-way at the north end of parcel 04-0759 (1902 1st Avenue). He told the board staff received no utility comments and no public opposition. "This abandonment is approximately 10 ft wide and spans the north end of the property," Hartman said. Commissioner Duncan moved to approve AB-26-8; the motion passed unanimously.
Assistant county manager Danny Smith presented AB-26-9, a county-initiated abandonment of a portion of Club Drive in the Breedlove Addition to resolve platting discrepancies. Smith said county staff had reviewed the area and recommended abandonment provided utility access is preserved; Georgia Power requested an easement over the entire abandonment area. "Abandonment will resolve some of the issues of lot lines and return the property to the tax digest," Smith said. The board approved AB-26-9 with the condition granting an easement to Georgia Power.
Planning staff presented two sign-variance requests. ZV-26-8 would allow a 43.08-square-foot sign for Island Ace at 329 Long View Plaza on St. Simons Island, exceeding the 24-square-foot island sign limit; staff noted earlier similar signage on the site. ZV-26-9 asked permission for up to 690 square feet of aggregate signage at 300 Mall Boulevard for Rural King. Everett Love, representing the applicant, said the sign area fits the scale of the former Sears building and asked the board to approve the variance: "Request that you approve this." Commissioners approved both variances unanimously.
The board also approved SUP-26-1, a special-use permit for Wine, Body, and Soul at 208 Red Fern Village after the Islands Planning Commission recommended approval. Sharon Otto, the new owner, described the venue as a community-oriented business that intends to hold small events such as "paint and sips" rather than operate as a bar. The board voted to grant the special-use permit.
On appointments, the commission selected two citizens to four-year terms on the Board of Tax Assessors (terms beginning Aug. 7, 2026): Andrea Lawson (confirmed by a 5-1 vote) and Richard Wood (confirmed by a recorded vote described in the meeting as five in favor). The board recessed to executive session for real estate and personnel matters and later returned to approve executive-session minutes from May 7, 2026 before adjourning.
Most items recorded no public opposition during the public-hearing portions of the meeting. Several consent-agenda adjustments were made at the start of the session: the board agreed to defer final plat approval for the West Point Phase 5 subdivision and to add item 9.5 (limited warranty deeds and easements for Millennium Center roadways and stormwater facilities) to the public consent agenda.
The meeting concluded after the executive-session actions were handled; no further public hearings were scheduled at that time.
