Wayne Public Library launches 'Unearth a Story' summer reading program

The Wayne Public Library on June 2 previewed its summer reading program, 'Unearth a Story,' aimed at readers of all ages and focused on paleontology and discovery. Library director Jodie Wallak told the council the program will run in June and July, with a kickoff party on Saturday, June 6 from 12 to 5 p.m. and a finale event on Aug. 1 featuring a dinosaur-themed magic show and grand-prize drawings.
Wallak outlined programming for children (weekly themed activities, crafts and science demonstrations including a visit from an award-winning paleontologist), teens (Minecraft, scavenger hunts and an anime club), and adults (a National Kidney Foundation cooking presentation, archaeology talks from Wayne State University, seed-saving instruction and craft nights). The library is offering prizes donated by local businesses and partner organizations, including the State Wayne Theater, which provided 100 free movie tickets for early sign-ups.
Wallak also addressed access during nearby construction, noting Second Street access to Veterans Plaza remains available and parking accommodations have been arranged. Participation figures from prior years were shown (42 unique participants last year) and staff encouraged broader community turnout this summer.
Next steps: the library opens sign-ups at the kickoff; organizers asked residents to RSVP to the contacts listed in program materials.
