Commission votes to ask select board to expand membership from five to seven

The Commission on Disability voted unanimously to ask the select board to increase its membership to seven and to present a rationale that will pair more members with assigned duties to advance accessibility work.
At its May 28 meeting, the Townsend Commission on Disability voted to send a request to the select board asking that the commission’s membership be raised from five to seven members.
Chair Cindy King explained she had discussed the proposal with the select board and that concerns center on quorums and what the commission would do with more members. Commissioners said a modest increase would allow the board to assign specific responsibilities — for example digital accessibility, grant work, sidewalks and outreach — so tasks could be distributed without overburdening a few members.
Kelly Burke moved the motion to ask the select board to raise the COOD membership to seven and Don Priest seconded. The motion passed by recorded voice votes: Kelly Burke, Don Priest, Yasmir and Cindy King were recorded as voting yes.
The commission will prepare a short rationale and present it when the select board considers the request; the chair said the commission will attempt to post the rationale and, if the request is approved, stage further expansions later if needed.
