Mayor James G. Boyd read a proclamation June 2 declaring that the De Pere City Band is celebrating its 50th anniversary, recognizing the ensemble and its founder Ken Peterson for contributions to the region's musical life. The mayor said the official presentation of the proclamation will be made at the band's concert next week.
The proclamation notes that the band, founded in 1976 as a Bicentennial City Band, has been "an integral part of Northeast Wisconsin's art and culture community," and that Ken Peterson's work as a teacher, adjudicator and performer shaped multiple generations of local musicians. "We do hereby commend the De Pere City Band and its members for 50 years of bringing music to the community," Mayor Boyd read.
Pat Hurlesska, a long-time community musician, told the council that the band has carried Peterson's legacy and now includes multiple generations of players. "Summer nights at Voyager Park with our concerts are just a wonderful way to spend an evening," Hurlesska said, inviting residents to the five scheduled concerts and noting the band is volunteer-run and not city-funded.
The mayor and council applauded the band representatives and indicated the formal presentation of the proclamation will occur at the band's next concert. The band also distributed invitations and clarified that the official proclamation presentation date was moved to next week.
