The appointments came during the commission's reorganization item. Commissioners present voted in favor of both motions; one commissioner, Castaneda, was absent for the roll calls. Commissioners recorded their votes by name during the roll calls.
Under the city's municipal code, the commission must select a new chair at the first meeting in June. Commissioners discussed whether to delay the reorganization because not all members were present, but staff noted the legal requirement and the body proceeded with nominations. A commissioner moved to appoint Prieto as chair; another commissioner seconded the motion and the vote passed. Commissioners then moved and seconded a motion to appoint Margarita Valenzuela as vice chair, and that motion also passed.
The votes were recorded by roll call: Commissioner Margarita Valenzuela, Commissioner Osayande, Vice Chairperson Daisy Prieto and Chairperson Reese each voted yes during the proceedings. The minutes approval and the reorganization motions were conducted in open session and the new officers took effect immediately for the commission's procedural purposes.
The commission then continued with the evening's agenda, including a staff workshop on permit types and Brown Act responsibilities. The next regular meeting will follow the commission's posted schedule.
