Council interviews seven junior-council applicants; several students highlight environmental and civic programs

The borough held interviews for the junior council-person program and heard from seven applicants who described volunteer work, student-government experience, and local projects they would pursue if selected.

Anika (a rising senior) said she co-hosts environmental service events and a youth radio show and described an outreach approach focusing on youth education and hands-on projects. “Change usually starts with the youth,” she said, describing a neighborhood cleanup and a weekly radio segment she helps produce.

Priscilla (also a senior applicant) described student-council treasurer experience and fundraising work; she said social media and school channels would be her primary tools for recruiting peers. Elena emphasized youth voice initiatives and proposals to bring council members into schools for accessible conversations. ‘‘Bring the council to youth,’’ she said, urging on-campus lunches and Q&A sessions so younger residents feel heard.

Council members praised applicants’ civic experience and ideas. Several councilors identified Elena as a leading candidate during the post-interview discussion; staff said finalists will be decided after all interviews and deliberations. Council did not make a selection at the meeting.

Council members also discussed a possible youth advisory committee to broaden youth participation beyond the single junior representative; staff said they will review legal and administrative constraints before bringing a proposal back to council.
