Mount Lake Terrace marks Pride Month, Juneteenth and Gun Violence Awareness Day with proclamations and community speakers

At its June 4 meeting the Mount Lake Terrace City Council presented three community proclamations: LGBTQIA+ Pride Month, Juneteenth (referred to in the meeting as "Junth"), and National Gun Violence Awareness Day (the first Friday in June).
Councilmember Doyle read the Pride Month proclamation and invited representatives from Edmonds Pride and the Mount Lake Terrace High School GSA to the podium; an Edmonds Pride director thanked the city and urged action to pair visibility with protections for community members.
Councilmember Murray presented the Juneteenth proclamation and introduced Wally Webster, founder of the Access Project. Webster described the group’s formation after local gun deaths and urged the city to support community navigation and mental-health interventions for youth as part of violence prevention and community healing.
Councilmember Paige presented the Gun Violence Awareness proclamation. Jan Englehart, a volunteer with Moms Demand Action, and other advocates reiterated the proclamation’s statistics about gun deaths and called for continued local prevention work; the proclamation encouraged residents to wear orange to raise awareness.
Council members and staff encouraged attendance at local Pride and Juneteenth events and thanked the advocates present.
